Supervisory Nuclear Medical Technologist

The duties and responsibilities of the Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist include but are not limited to the following:
Supervise the daily activities of the Nuclear Medicine Section to include directing the activities of the technologists and the work schedule. Performs the administrative and personnel management functions relative to staff supervised. Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system. Observe workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques. Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Resolves informal complaints and grievances. Develops work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary. Provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters. Interviews candidates for positions in the unit; recommends appointment, promotion, or reassignments to such positions. Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area. Reviews and approves or disapproves leave requests. Assures subordinates are trained and fully comply with the provisions of safety regulations. Develops performance standards and evaluates employees annually. Oversees that daily patient schedules are appropriately blocked and assigned to the correct camera, area or equipment by scheduling staff, making timely corrections and changes as needed. Ensures that the section maintains regulatory compliance by generating and overseeing error-free documented records of daily delivery, receipt and wipe testing of radioactive packages; daily dose dispensing; Informed Consent; In-house prepared radiopharmaceuticals; daily area surveys; decay in-storage; image labeling and all other daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual records required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and VA regulations, and other federal regulations, policies and procedures. Maintains technically up-to-date, well documented policies and procedures for patient studies, therapeutic treatments, and radiation safety by keeping abreast of regulatory changes, Society of Nuclear Medicine and industry standards and interfacing with staff physicians for approval. Applies edits, revisions and composes new written guidelines as needed. Generates nuclear medicine technologist on-call schedules. Manages performance of and generates documentation and image media for the required annual Society of Nuclear Medicine phantom study. Maintains adequate medical supply stock by submitting written supply and equipment requests, as needed, Insures that the physical area is continuously maintained according to Joint Commission Guidelines and medical center policy; and that safety and security measures are adhered to by performing routine physical inspections and submitting work orders and requests for repair and maintenance as needed. Generates informal instructional guidelines, signage and other documents to assist technologist staff with complex equipment operations and detailed digital image processing. Composes general written correspondence and documents to interface within the service, with outside modalities, vendors and customers to maintain effective and efficient operations on a day basis, utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook programs. Interface on a daily basis, in person and by phone, with other sections and modalities, customers/patients, families, vendors, volunteers, and others, as needed to accomplish necessary sectional and patient care objectives. Participates in permanent, regularly held meetings and committees as assigned, such as the bi weekly supervisor's meeting, Radiation Safety Committee, staff meetings, and others. Also participates in intermittent meetings and short-term committees, as required, such as Construction Meetings, vendor meetings etc. Work Schedule:

United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. NMTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, of this part. Certification. All applicants must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N). NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification eligibility requirements are normally satisfied by one of the following:
Completion of a NMTCB-recognized nuclear medicine technology program, OR Completion of a nuclear medicine technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's degree. Educational programs must have structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio-pharmacy, as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB.NOTE:
Technologists functioning as multi-modality technologists require additional specific certifications as stated in assignment descriptions below. Exceptions. Non-certified applicants, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification, may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate NMT under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 (a)(1)(D). Failure to obtain certification within 1 year from the date of appointment is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment. Failure to Obtain Credential. In all cases, NMTs must actively pursue meeting certification requirements starting from the date of their appointment. Failure to become certified within 1 year from date of appointment will result in removal from the GS-0601 NMT occupation and may result in termination of employment. Loss of Credential. Once certified, NMTs must maintain a full, valid, and unrestricted certification. Loss of credential will result in removal from the GS-0601 NMT occupation and may result in termination of employment. For occupations which require an active certification at all grade levels, at the discretion of the appointing official, an employee may be reassigned to another occupation for which he/she qualifies if a placement opportunity exists. For occupations which require an active credential (licensure/certification/registration) in assignments above the journey level only, at the discretion of the appointing official, an employee may remain at an appropriate lower grade level in the occupation when both of the following apply:
the credential is not a requirement and a placement opportunity exists. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Experience:
candidate must have 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
(1)Ability to assign and evaluate work of subordinate staff as well as resolve problems that may interfere with the delivery of nuclear medicine services by staff members. (2) Skill in providing complex nuclear medicine patient procedures. (3) Ability to develop and initiate new protocols which apply to current research findings. (4) Skill in providing administrative reports both orally and in writing with higher level authorities (i.e., NHPP, TJC, NRC, Inspector General, executive leadership) . (5) Ability to interview candidates for positions in the section; recommend appointments, advancements, or, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; evaluate performance; and identify continuing education and training needs. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
