Advanced Medical Support Assistant

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model (i.e. Gen Rad, Nuclear Medicine, MRI, US, CT, Call Center, and Radiation Oncology) in order to schedule outpatient imaging appointments, and to coordinate inpatient imaging procedures. The incumbent is responsible for the administrative duties of Imaging HCG with final authority resting with the Administrative Officer (AO) and the Chief of Imaging HCG. Additional duties as follow:
Performs receptionist duties to include check-in of patients and registration of imaging procedure. Interprets doctor's orders, progress notes and completes orders for labs, x-rays and diagnostic studies. Communicates with physicians, patients, and other staff to facilitate timeliness of patient care, the timely scheduling of referrals and the smooth flow of the outpatient clinic. Coordinates and arranges correspondence related to the Radiology and Radiation Oncology Clinics, including letters of recommendation, letters to physicians concerning patients and to other medical facilities. Performs the duties of a timekeeper for the Radiology and Radiation Oncology department. Assists with clinic access contingency plans by adjusting appointment times, dates, shifts patients to other imaging equipment as conflict with staffing and/or coverage, and equipment problems occur. Screens/receives phone calls and visitors in a courteous and timely manner, determines the nature of requests and provides the information desired using privacy rules and established processes. Assist with the Beneficiary Travel Program and work with the Health Benefits Advisor Office/Member Services for eligibility and means test functions. Accesses the patient's computerized medical record system (CPRS) to review and retrieve medical information. Participates in the daily huddles and weekly team meetings where department communications and management occur. Supports patient safety standards using the correct Veterans Affairs identification of all patients through the use of two forms of identification, name and full Social Security Number. Updates patient demographic information, either in person during check-in or over the phone. Schedule:

Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or (2) Education:

Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification:

In addition to the basic requirements, to qualify for the GS-6 grade level requires a minimum of one (1) year experience at the next lower grade level (GS-5). Experience at the GS-5 level includes:
Answering phones, greeting patients, relaying messages to appropriate staff in charge, canceling, and re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines; entering no-show information, participating in huddles with other MSAs and /or clinic staff to determine the daily needs of the clinic; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments in areas of responsibility; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information when patients check-in for appointments. Coordinates administrative functions relating to emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; and determines appointment Type based on patient's eligibility or status (i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, research patient, VA employee, etc.) In addition, you must have experience which demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ability to communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines (e.g. medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and nursing staff) to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met. Set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, electronically, by phone, in person, and in writing, with internal and external customers. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels, as well as resolving patient concerns. Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process (including, but not limited to, scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals) as it relates to access to care. Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient flow, and patient support care to include, but not limited to appointment cycles, outside patient referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, provider availability, etc. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
