Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technician (MRI)

Duties include but not limited to:
Continually reviews new developments in the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Is continually on the alert to improve quality of exams utilizing the new technologies available. The purpose of this review is to provide the patients with the best possible scans for diagnostic purposes. Responsible for stocking and inventory of all MRI supplies and related materials. Confers with Radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of MRI scanning. Schedules patients for examinations. Advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention. Effectively enforces and practices MRI safety to avoid accidents to patients, staff and self. This is achieved using aggressive screening for metal, using MRI safe equipment, and respecting the various MRI safety zones. The incumbent must be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the Medical Center; and, participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Develops formal orientation, training, coordinates, and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols Performs image reconstructions on advanced workstations as directed by the radiologist or as part of a given study. Coordinates repair and installation of all new and established MRI equipment and accessories with Biomed Engineering. Participates in developing for new equipment requests. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized information system, copying of images (to CD), logging patients on the HIS-RIS work list. Properly identifies patient images. This is essential so that mistaken identity of patient images does not occur. The Technologist must be certain that the patient I.D. band and the request are identical. Serves as member of the MR Safety Committee. Technologist Staff Scheduling:
Develops and maintains a schedule for MRI Technologists. Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and develops the weekly/monthly schedules. Organizes staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations. Reports absences and tardiness to Chief Technologist. Recommends the reassignment of Technologists, if necessary, because of call-ins or increased/decreased workload. Coordinates leave requests i.e. vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing levels. Staff Training:
Trains new technologists in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Recommends, coordinates and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Instruct other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. Participates in the education of MRI Technologists as well as other technologists through departmental in-services. Participates in the evaluation of new employees Inventory Control:
Ensures that adequate quantities of MRI supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures that MRI procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies all the time with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Assists in determining costs for specific exams, and projecting costs for budgetary purposes. Coordinates new product evaluation. Recommends methods and products to reduce costs and/or increase quality. Work Schedule:

All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). NOTE:
Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description. Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Experience:
MR Safety Officer (MRSO) experience. MRI Breast, Cardiac, Prostate, Enterography, and Spectroscopy experiences Grade Determinations:
Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-10 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. (2) Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR). This specialty modality requires additional knowledge of superconducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter. The practitioner must have specialized knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have specialized knowledge in the radio-frequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. This assignment may also perform basic magnetic resonance safety program duties. Technologists must be knowledgeable in contrast media, power injectors, and PACS. DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT (MR) certification. Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The technologist functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff. The technologist evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The technologist informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area. The technologist directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The technologist must have first hand knowledge of the MRI Zones set-up and enforces stringent safety requirements. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk ( ):
i. Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation. ii. Ability to evaluate quality management procedures and processes. iii. Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity. iv. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
